Iowa County Register of Deeds In-Person Searching

Effective April 3, 2023:

Zero tolerance for cell phone or other digital device usage during searching.

(Wis. Stat. 59.43(2))

Only one verbal warning will be given. Continued violators will be asked to leave the office.

Genealogy searches will be available by appointment only.

These appointments can be scheduled Tuesday-Thursday from 9:00am-3:00pm, in 2 hour increments. Please call the Register of Deeds office to schedule an appointment.


Only two people will be allowed in the vault area at a time.

Per Vital Statistics rules pursuant to WI Statutes Chapter 69, Admin Rule DFS 142:

1.) No cameras, cell phones or other recording device usage while searching.

2.) No food or drink allowed.

NOTE: The statewide vital records law went into effect June 1, 1907.

Vital Records prior to 1907 are limited.

Land records searching is available on the public computers in the hallway.

Customers can tract documents by legal description from 1990 forward.

All survey plats and CSMs can be tract from 1810 forward.

Grantor/Grantee search is available back to the 1940’s in LandShark.

All of our grantor/grantee indexes are available online as well (1835-1957) on the Register of Deeds department page on the county website.


The Office of the Register of Deeds (noted often hereafter, as ROD) was established in Wisconsin in 1836. Before that, land registration was handled by the Register in Probate. The 1848 Wisconsin Constitution established the ROD as a permanent element of the county-level governmental structure. Each county in Wisconsin has a Register of Deeds.

The Register of Deeds files, records, and issues instruments and documents of significance both to the community as a whole and to its individual citizens. Vital records document the span of our lives from birth to death. Land records documenting title in Wisconsin are maintained.

The filing or recording of other documents with the ROD is a way of putting the world on notice that something important has happened or will happen. The time of the act or transaction is often an important element in rights or relationships. The ROD records the time when, in effect, the public record is established.

About Us

The Iowa County Register of Deeds has a staff of two deputies. Documents are recorded and imaged utilizing automated tract software implemented in 1997. Currently the computerized tract index goes back to 1990 and Grantor/Grantee back to 1940’s.   Digital images are available online for Documents dating back to the early 1800’s.    Birth records are available for anyone born in Wisconsin.   Marriage, Death and Divorce certificates are also available, depending on the date of the event. Indexes are available for genealogist with marriages dating back to the early 1840’s, birth and death dating back to the 1870’s.
