The Corporation Counsel position is created under Chapter 59 of the Wisconsin Statutes.  The Corporation Counsel is the attorney responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to the county’s elected officials, departments, offices, agencies, boards and commissions, and for representing the county’s interests, in all civil legal matters.  This includes both prosecutorial and defensive functions, and as such, the Corporation Counsel's office represents the county’s interests in civil and administrative litigation matters in various courts and forums.  The Corporation Counsel provides legal advice and counsel regarding the duties, responsibilities, authorities and legal requirements of county employees and officials; and the Corporation Counsel prepares reports and legal opinions on matters such as public contracts; land use planning, zoning, and acquisition; county ordinances and policies; claims; and litigation.  The Corporation Counsel is not responsible for criminal legal matters and other areas that fall under the purview of the District Attorney.
